Oncoming walks in the civic city, with mandatory stops
The most famous building in Debrecen, also referred to as the “bastion of the Calvinist Rome” as the bastion of the Hungarian Reformation, is the Great Church, which commands authority and entered Hungarian history by voting for the dethronement of the Habsburg House in April 1849. In addition to viewing the building, it is definitely worth walking along the panoramic sidewalk built between its two towers, from where we can also photograph the city from a bird’s eye view. The museum of the Reformed College, which has been operating continuously since 1538, provides an insight into the lives of former students with the help of interactive tools. The best of Hungarian literature studied here, including Ady, Arany, Csokonai and Móricz, thus Miklós Toldi and Misi Nyilas. Fans of Magda Szabó’s novels can also visit the memorial house of the Debrecen-born writer.
Culturally interested travelers can admire the monumental paintings of the world-famous Munkácsy trilogy and the rich Egyptian collection at the Déri Museum, while at Central Europe’s largest contemporary exhibition venue, MODEM, you can get a taste of modern arts, from flashlight to archive to musical waiting for visitors.
But we can also breathe in the atmosphere of the civic city if we just walk along the main street lined with beautiful trading houses, or sit out on the terrace of one of the cafés and bistros of the youthful Hal köz.
