Healing even at rest
Debrecen also has a spa certification, in both cities you can experience the proven healing power of thermal waters in a relaxing environment. Under the huge dome of the Mediterranean adventure pool of the Aquaticum in Debrecen, located in the heart of the Great Forest, we can feel tropical in winter even among the palm and banana trees that have grown huge. In addition to the traditional spa treatment, a wide range of physiotherapy and movement therapy is used in the medical department of the Aquaticum in Debrecen, and almost forty different treatments can be used based on the medicinal water. Physical and mental regeneration can be enhanced by a hearty walk in the Great Forest.
Oncoming walks in the civic city, with mandatory stops
The most famous building in Debrecen, also referred to as the “bastion of the Calvinist Rome” as the bastion of the Hungarian Reformation, is the Great Church, which commands authority and entered Hungarian history by voting for the dethronement of the Habsburg House in April 1849. In addition to viewing the building, it is definitely worth walking along the panoramic sidewalk built between its two towers, from where we can also photograph the city from a bird’s eye view. The museum of the Reformed College, which has been operating continuously since 1538, provides an insight into the lives of former students with the help of interactive tools. The best of Hungarian literature studied here, including Ady, Arany, Csokonai and Móricz, thus Miklós Toldi and Misi Nyilas. Fans of Magda Szabó’s novels can also visit the memorial house of the Debrecen-born writer.
Culturally interested travelers can admire the monumental paintings of the world-famous Munkácsy trilogy and the rich Egyptian collection at the Déri Museum, while at Central Europe’s largest contemporary exhibition venue, MODEM, you can get a taste of modern arts, from flashlight to archive to musical waiting for visitors.
But we can also breathe in the atmosphere of the civic city if we just walk along the main street lined with beautiful trading houses, or sit out on the terrace of one of the cafés and bistros of the youthful Hal köz.
Cultural park, round forest and amusement laboratory: together with the family
The Nagyerdő is only ten minutes away by tram from the center of Debrecen, which is a great place for romantic getaways, family trips and wine conversations, and many new or reborn attractions await visitors among the hundred-year-old trees. We can have a picnic on the sunbathing boards of the football field the size of Lake Békás, sit on a few laps for the games in the amusement park, have a fun lesson at the Agora Science Experience Center, and in the evening admire the spectacular laser show of the Fog Theater.
Success with children is guaranteed by the Toldi Panopticon, which processes the history of a powerful knight, and the Kerekerdő Adventure Park, which is based on the world of fairy tales, and the five-fold Pagony playground and the renewed Water Tower climbing wall to drain excess energy. With its lookout tower, splatter terrace, musical and thematic programs, the monument is a real community space, a cozy place to spend a pleasant evening.
Campus Festival
Many exciting festivals and events await visitors in and around Debrecen throughout the year. The July Campus Festival, which is becoming increasingly popular among young people, is also referred to as the “Hungarian Glastonbury”, where rock, electronic, world music and jazz concerts come into focus, with the performance of several international world stars every year.
Debrecen Flower Carnival
The half-century-old Debrecen Flower Carnival hardly needs to be presented to anyone, as it is one of the most spectacular and accompanying programs in the country, and is now a week-long event. It is worth scheduling our arrival until August 20, so that we can admire the sight of the high, colorful flower compositions on the first floor, which are accompanied by dancers and traditional groups along the streets of Debrecen.
Debreczeni Zamat – Pálinka and Double Sausage Festival
The Debreczen Zamat – Pálinka and Double Sausage Festival (Brandy and Double Sausage Festival) is organized around the iconic food of the city in September, where the best pálinka manufactories in the country and the popular restaurants of the cívisváros offer their delicacies accompanied by colorful programs and concerts.
Guests staying in Hajdúszoboszló will not miss anything, they can taste the flavors of Hajdúság at several gastro festivals during the year, including the Grill and Beer Festival in May, and in September they will be invited to the Organic Food and Wine Festival.
